The Phone Bank

I did some phone bank work for Obama tonight... cold calling residents of Columbia, South Carolina, to invite them to attend an Oprah-Obama event in January. It was interesting.

First, why Oprah? What a stupid pairing. Is he trying to be more appealing to blacks? To women? To black women? I have no idea.

Second, cold calling people is brutal work. Lots of: "Who? What?" Immediately followed by: Click.

Third, it's a very small world. There were a dozen of us making calls (all but two were 40 or older) and I happened to know three of the people. One was someone I went to high school with, one was a doctor from a previous insurance plan, and one was the wife of someone my mom used to work with. Also... the building we were in just happens to have the parking lot where my best friend took me to get high for the first time when I was 16 (sorry Mom, it was 24 years ago, these things happened).

Why Oprah? Duh....Forbes' international rich list has listed Winfrey as the world's only black billionaire in 2004, 2005, and 2006 and as the first black woman billionaire in world history. Great choice. If I wasn't Republican, I kind of like Obama.

And Oprah has what to do with any of the issues that matter to anyone, exactly?

Unless she's giving out cars at the event, of course... then I'm a fan.

Which issue is SHE not involved in that would be of interest to the Liberal base... "one of the 100 people who most influenced the 20th Century" and "one of the most influential people" of 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 by Time. In 2005 she became the first black person listed by Business Week as one of America's top 50 most generous philanthropists, having given an estimated $303 million.[86] Winfrey was the 32nd most philanthropic.

I think you have a bias against TV/Movie personalities ala Ronald Reagan...otherwise you would LOVE Oprah! Even I love Oprah.

I have never been a big Oprah junkie but ok, you've sold me on her human creds.

And no, I don't have an issue with entertainment people ala Ronald Reagan.

In fact, I'm a big fan of the Dixie Chicks. :-)

Hey Cuz,
Why Oprah? Well, the one main reason I can think of is everything she endorses goes number 1 within days. She picks a book to read for her book club... BAM.... it's on the New York Times best seller list within 2 days. She says she like ribs from a certain resturant... BAM... that resturant will be booked for months. Whatever Oprah endorses America adores. Obama doesn't want her money or her political clout( which she doesn't have)......... he wants her adoring fans and their undying devotion. If Oprah tells them to vote for Obama they will vote in record numbers. Obama wants Oprah's public.

I really liked your pictures a couple a blog enties ago. You look a lot like your Mom in the one at the bar. Take care Cuz, talk at ya later.

Hi Matthew,
Man... I guess I do not have the proper Oprah appreciation. It's not like I hate her or anything, I just have a certain sore spot when it comes to mixing politics and entertainment. I'll get over it... and it didn't stop me from trying to lure a bus load of people to the O-O event in Columbia.

Thanks for the kind words about the pics. I will let Mom decide how to interpret your comment that I resemble her more in the bar photo... LOL.

Myself, I'll take it as a compliment. :-)
